Though not the official capital of Turkey, Istanbul is the dynamic metropolis of Turkey, with a population of over 10 million. That is why it is sometimes considered the largest city in Europe, even though only half of it spreads on the continental area, the other half being on the opposite side of the Bosphorus strait – that is in Asia.
Widely spoken in Turkey, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Greece and a number of other countries in the Balkans and the EU, the Turkish language got traditionally spread along with the extension of the Ottoman Empire and nowadays with the large number of Turkish emigrants in Western Europe.
