Before referring to the language and the people, the word “Swahili” applied to the land. Its origin is Arabic and it means “the coast”. The Swahili language reflects the history of Eastern Africa and the cultural melting of Asian and African people. It is a Bantu (African) language and one of the most ancient languages of the black continent.

Research shows that Swahili is the most widely spoken language in Eastern Africa; it is present in television, theatre and songs. This language is also promoted by organizations that encourage higher levels of education in African countries and is taught in many parts of the world.

The interaction of African countries, the trade, the migration, helped the Swahili language spread in Africa. The Swahili coast is East Africa, but nowadays the language also reached South Africa, Commodores, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Central African Republic, and Mozambique.
