Punjabi (Panjabi) is the language of the Punjabi people and the Punjab regions of northeastern India and western Pakistan. It was the language of the gurus, the founders of the Sikh religion. The sacred teachings of Sikhism are recorded in Punjabi in the Gurmukhi script. The Punjabi spoken in India is very close to Hindi, but in Pakistan the dialects differ markedly.
People speaking this language use several alphabets, depending on the region and the dialect. The most frequently used are Shahmukhi (with Persian influences) and Gurmukhī (Indian influences and also the older one).
The Punjabi people suffered a split between India and Pakistan, this being the cause for many significant differences in Punjabi language. In spite of their religious and national issues, the people tried to remain united and to preserve their language.
