Kyrgyzstan, formally known as the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country in Central Asia. Landlocked and mountainous, it borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China. A country of striking beauty and towering peaks, Kyrgyzstan became independent with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Kyrgyzstan can easily be the hot spot for tourism in Central Asia. It is located across the Tien Shan and is blessed with white peaks, glaciers, and emerald lakes. The salty water of Lake Issyk Kul, some Kyrgyz believe, will heal a wound the second time the wound is washed in it.
The majority of the Kyrgyz (75 percent) are Muslim. Of the rest, 20 percent, primarily Slavs, are Russian Orthodox, and 5 percent belong to Lutheranism (Germans), Buddhism (Chinese), and other religions.
Kirgiz, or Kirghiz, member of the Turkic subfamily of Altaic languages, is spoken in Kyrgyzstan and in the Pamir Mountains on the border between Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and China. Kyrgyz is also the name of the Old Turkic language found in inscriptions of the Yenisey River valley in Russia.
