In Northern Nigeria and in some areas of Niger lives the Housa population. Most of the Hausa speaking population has been converted to the jihad and are Muslim by the Sulani of Sokoto, but in the center of the Hausa area, there is a pagan population, that has kept its beliefs . They are called Maguzawa. The pagan Hausa are mostly farmers, while the modern Hausa are also occupational specialists.
The Hausa were organized in seven independent states: Biram, Daura, Kano, Katsina, Gobir, Rano, and Zazzau (or Zaria) and in these states, the customs and tradition remained unchanged by the occupation. The seven states are still organized according to what the land and the agriculture permits. The economy of Hausa is growing systematically, allowing the markets and the trade to become a part of the national and international markets.
An estimated 22 million native speakers and 17 million second language speakers use Hausa. There are many dialects of the Hausa language.
