A little bit smaller in area than Scotland, and with a similar density in population, Georgia is placed in the Eastern area of the Black Sea. As a former part of the Soviet Union, it traditionally bases its economy on tourism, agriculture and mining, still largely depending on the energetic resources imported from the Russian Federation. Its capital, Tbilisi is of a historical importance, being a strategic point on the Silk Road that traditionally connected the Far East with Asia Minor and Europe, and regarded today as an important centre on the transit route for global energy.
Due to ethnic conflicts between the Georgian majority and the Ossetian and Abkhazian minority, the country’s economy was on a free-fall in the early 90s and only got back to a stable level by the end of the decade.
Georgian language is spoken by around 4 million people in the country and about 200 thousands abroad.
