Afrikaans is one of the official languages in South Africa. The language is also spoken in the Republic of Namibia, in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Zambia. There are more varieties of the language: Eastern Cape Afrikaans (Oosgrensafrikaans - which became Standard Afrikaans), Cape Afrikaans (Kaapse Afrikaans) and Orange River Afrikaans (Oranjerivierafrikaans).
Afrikaans has its provenience in Dutch. It has a Germanic origin it and became a distinct language in the late 19th century.
